With the continuous evolution of technology, 5G technology is gradually becoming the focus of attention. As the fifth generation of mobile communication technology, 5G is not only a new digital advancement, but also connects the infinite possibilities of the future.
It will profoundly change our way of life, business model and social structure, and bring unprecedented development opportunities to the world.
Compared to Previous Generations, 5G is Like a Rocket
As the “fifth generation” of wireless network technology, 5G can deliver speeds up to 20 Gbps (two billion bits per second) in ideal conditions. That’s nearly 200 times faster than the 4G network. Your location, network provider, and device capabilities all influence that rate, but significant improvements in speed and performance can be expected from 5G in everyday scenarios.
3G brought the internet to our mobile phones. But with only 2,000 Kbps speeds, a low‑res movie took over an hour to download, and video and audio streaming were slowed.
4G LTE speeds were far faster than 3G—up to 100,000 Kbps. That means you could download a movie in seven minutes, video chat, stream content, and use cloud services.
With superior speeds of up to 20 Gbps, having 5G means that:
- You can download a full 8k movie in seconds
- You can experience tech such as VR, AR, and automated driving
- You can experience console-quality gaming on the go.
- You can stream, share, post and work in public settings without being slowed down by everyone around you when connected.
The Fundamental to Exceptional 5G Service: Spectrum
Spectrum is the most important part of wireless communications. Because the more spectrum we open on the network, the more data can move across the network faster and more efficiently.
The spectrum is divided into frequency bands. 5G uses various low-band, mid-band and high-band frequencies that differ from previous wireless protocols such as 3G and 4G LTE in order to maximize the potential of this new generation of wireless communication.
Low-band, like the powerful 600MHz spectrum, travels farther—over hundreds of square miles—and can pass through more obstacles, providing better coverage and a stronger signal both indoors and out.
Mid-band balances speed and range, providing broader coverage than high-band. And it’s less impacted by buildings.
High-band frequencies, such as millimeter wave, have greater bandwidth to carry more data in dense urban areas, but have limited penetration in buildings and require cell sites to be close by.
However, the resource of wireless spectrum is finite, spectrum licensing in each country is controlled by a governing body which work with other agencies to determine how spectrum is allocated. So spectral efficiency is critical, especially as we scale our network and define new, automated, customized ways for customers to use it.
Data demands on wireless networks are expected to increase rapidly, with some projecting a need to carry seven times today’s data loads within 5 years. To keep up with that demand, operators will need access to more 5G-suitable spectrum. One recent study concluded that the industry will need at least 1,400 megahertz of additional mid-band spectrum by 2032 to keep up with subscribers’ usage patterns. Given these trends, policymakers must start now to identify a pipeline of spectrum that can power wireless networks in the future and sustain the reliable performance customers have come to expect.
Meet 5G, What Can FOTUX Do
The prospect of 5G technology is exciting. It will create more possibilities for human beings and promote innovation and development in all fields of society. However, we also need global cooperation to solve corresponding technical, economic and social challenges to ensure that the development of 5G can bring real benefits to everyone and realize a more connected and intelligent future. FOTUX keeps innovating and being in line with the evolving technologies and demand, although we are currently unable to provide support for wireless services, we will continue to explore in the field of optical communications and contribute our strength to modern network construction with our high-quality products.
