Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC)
The Transmission of Network in HFC
The Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) service delivery architecture employed by cable operators and multi-system operators (MSO) utilizes a combination of fiber optic cabling and coaxial cabling to efficiently distribute video, data, and voice content between the headend and subscribers. Typically, the transmission of signals occurs from the headend to a hub by means of fiber optic cable, covering a distance of approximately one mile. For instance, in service areas encompassing a range of 64 to 1,000* homes, the fiber optic cable is terminated at an HFC node. At this point, it is converted into a radio Frequency (RF) Signal and subsequently transmitted over coaxial cable to reach the residences or businesses of subscribers.
Moving existing HFC networks into the feature
The transition of the HFC network poses an inescapable and intricate undertaking. Thanks to DOCSIS technologies, it becomes feasible to maximize the bandwidth on the current HFC infrastructure.
The current widely deployed DOCSIS 3.1 significantly improves the modulation rates and data throughput to subscribers, also expanding the downstream to 1200MHz and beyond, and the upstream to 85MHz and beyond. Designed to carry the cable industry into the 10G future, new DOCSIS 4.0 can further extend the useful lifespan of today’s HFC network.
By utilizing these technologies, operators can efficiently extend the longevity of their HFC networks deep into the 2030 decade; and they can then set themselves up for eventual success in delivering FTTH.
